Disney Cruise Line

Project Categories:

When Disney launched its first two cruise ships (Disney Magic and Disney Wonder) in 1998, we at IDEAS were heavily involved.

We created an array of onboard media:

  • Port of call informational videos
  • Onboard game shows
  • Informational videos for guests riding to and from the airport
  • The signature animation still used in an award-winning, Broadway-style show

When the Disney team began looking for media elements for their two new ships (Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy) in 2010, we were the perfect choice.

As part of the work for the new ships, we were responsible for scripting and postproduction on 11 different videos.

These ranged widely in subject matter and placement:

  • A new safety video for use on all four Disney ships
  • A “Ship Tips” video, helping guests familiarize themselves with the new ships
  • Bridge, engine room and galley tour videos

We scripted the videos early in the process. Then, we gave the shot sheets to the Disney Cruise Line producers to acquire original footage.

Finally, we executed a host of postproduction duties:

  • VO recording
  • Motion graphics design
  • Editing
  • Audio sweetening

The final step was video compression of the final videos to files to go to the ships.

More Magical Work

Disney shot the original footage from the Disney Dream while the ship first made its transatlantic voyage from Germany (where it was built) to Florida.

We received the footage, completed the videos and gave them to the ship’s team. As a result, Disney could install them before the first official voyage in January 2011.

The project’s other portion consisted of designing and executing 68 unique, nonanimated templates and 17 unique, animated templates.

We designed some of the digital screens for horizontal viewing and others for vertical viewing. Disney used the digital screens on monitors ranging from 17 inches all the way to 65 inches throughout the ships.

We designed the screens for a host of uses — and then some:

  • General announcements
  • Photography gallery
  • Retail
  • Theaters
  • Restaurants
  • Bars
  • Kids’ activities
  • Spa treatments

The screen production goal was to create an overall branded look and feel while giving each screen its own identity.

IDEAS worked closely with the Disney Cruise Line creative team to create an overall look and feel that matched the ship’s theme.

Once we established that branded look, each screen got its own personality!

We created the screens in a way that onboard technical teams can update the text at a moment’s notice. They can even accommodate hourly changes.
