Blackmagic Cinema Camera
By Rebecca Hodges
We just received a new addition to our family: The Blackmagic Cinema Camera. This camera was most recently featured at the NAB 2012 conference and received rave reviews. While technology is moving at a rapid speed (coming with many pros and cons), we have found that this camera offers exceptional quality and a timely workflow that will be useful to us here at IDEAS. It features an aluminum body, interchangeable optics, high resolution 2.5K sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, and 12-bit RAW uncompressed and compressed ProRes and DNxHD file formats- making it what we like to call the “editor’s camera.” Included with the camera is the UltraScope waveform monitoring software (which displays scopes on any computer connected by Thunderbolt) and a full version of DaVinci Resolve Software for Mac and Windows (which we already have on our editing systems).
Along with the camera, we also just received some shiny new C-stands, four 4-Bank Videssence lights to be mounted on our green-screen stage, an Audio-Technica 1800 Series Deluxe Audio Kit (dual bodypack wireless mic systems, lavaliers, ENG Mic, plus accessories), and an Azden FMX-42a 4-Channel Microphone Field Mixer. In the past we have rented equipment and hired crews (which we will still do for larger shoots), but with the increasing desire to produce high quality videos for our clients as well as for internal projects, purchasing a camera and an audio kit made the most sense for our needs. With the arrival of our new lenses, we will begin working with all of this equipment immediately! We are excited to learn all about the new hardware and can’t wait to share some new videos with you in the near future!
