IDEAS Sr. Audio Mixer Rob Hill was called upon for sound design and post production audio mixing for The Announcement, a documentary about Magic Johnson’s 1991 announcement of being HIV-positive and the personal journey he has taken over the last two decades. The film was directed by Nelson George and produced by NBA Entertainment (NBAE) for ESPN Films.
The sound design and audio mix was executed over a one week period at IDEAS. The film was edited at NBAE then all files and source materials were shipped to IDEAS for the mix. When completed, the mix was converted in to files and shipped back to the final edit, merged with the final video, laid to tape, and sent to ESPN for airing.
The Announcement documents what has transpired in the life of Magic Johnson since November 7, 1991 when he announced his retirement from the Los Angeles Lakers. The film is directed by Nelson George, a filmmaker, author and historian who specializes in stories highlighting the African-American experience. The film was produced by NBA Entertainment in association with ESPN Films. The Announcement is now available on Netflix, click HERE to find it.
