American Idol Experience

American Idol Experience

SPA1

IDEAS was involved with the post production of the media elements for the American Idol Experience attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios®. The project included off-line and on-line editing, graphic design, and audio mixing. As part of the project, close to two hundred hours of media was digitized on to the Avid Unity network storage unit. The media came from original production by Walt Disney Entertainment as well as final shows of American Idol. The media was mainly accessed by one edit suite but there were times where multiple edit suites were working on the same media at the same time. Various elements were edited as attract loops and pre-show loops that run on the “diamond vision” outside the theater and in the guest waiting area. Finally, additional elements were created as part of the grand finale show that runs each night. The winner of the grand finale wins a number of items, most notably a “go to the front of the line” ticket so that person can audition for the real American Idol during its next season of auditions. The backbone of the pre-show is a fictitious show called “American Idol Today.” The show is hosted by former American Idol finalist Justin Guarini. The entire “show” was edited at IDEAS and includes a graphics package created in both 2D and 3D.

Every minute of footage, including all the graphic elements, was edited from start to finish in HD. As part of the edit, all footage of every American Idol show since its inception was a possible element for various pieces. An overall graphics package was created by IDEAS, including the logo loop that is shown throughout the day outside the theater on a diamond vision screen, for all guests of the park to see. While all of the actual American Idol episodes existed at 720p HD resolution, all the original elements created and shot for the attractions were done in 1080i resolution. For the final deliverable, all elements were converted to 720p and made into files that could run on a server. The video elements will be updated at least once a year with the new winners and other updates as needed.
