Perinatal eLearning Course
Ascension Health is the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system in the country. They serve patients through a network of hospitals and related health facilities providing acute care services, long-term care, community health services, psychiatric, rehabilitation, and residential care.
Previously, IDEAS developed two eLearning courses focused on Ascension Health’s Pressure Ulcers Priority for Action initiative. From that relationship Ascension Health contracted with IDEAS to develop a new training toolkit to train and support facilitators who run simulations as part of their Perinatal Safety initiative – HANDS (Handling All Neonatal Deliveries Safely) program.

Ascension Health has incorporated the NOELLE™ simulator (manufactured by Gaumard Scientific) into a comprehensive simulation training program which focuses primarily on practicing and improving teamwork skills among labor and delivery teams. The key to any successful simulation begins with the confidence and competency of the facilitator, therefore the initial phase of this program is focused on equipping this audience with the tools and knowledge they need.
In order to prepare facilitators to set up and conduct simulation training within their hospital this training toolkit includes a variety of training opportunities including a one-hour custom-designed, self-paced, interactive eLearning tool as well as a supporting facilitator guide. This will be packaged as a programmatic approach to ensure all facilitators are on track. Upon completion of this training, facilitators will demonstrate competency in:
- Setting up, operating, and maintaining NOELLE™, a high fidelity birthing simulator
- Preparing labor and delivery teams to practice teamwork skills
- Running simulation training drills utilizing a variety of obstetrical emergencies and teamwork skills
- Incorporating debriefing
Packaging instructional design, art and programming, and a rich and relevant story into a comprehensive training program will help facilitators and labor and delivery teams in working together to improve safety for mothers and babies and achieving zero preventable birth traumas.
